Julianne Moore stars as Mona Friedman, a shy New Jersey homemaker who loses herself in a local musical production, in Jesse Eisenberg’s musical comedy film The Debut. According to reporting from Vulture and Variety, the film premiered on September 5 at the Telluride Film Festival and is scheduled for a U.S. theatrical release on December 11.

The Debut was written, directed, and co-produced by Jesse Eisenberg, who connects his own character in the film to the community theater troupe that Moore’s character joins. According to Vanity Fair, Eisenberg praised Moore’s unique screen presence for the role, stating that there is not an actress on earth who can play something so simultaneously alien and human. In the first half of the film, Mona Friedman is extremely passive and shy, allowing others to make decisions while her children grow up and her husband offers little attention. According to Variety, Mona decides to audition for a local musical called Nosy Neighbors to play the tough building superintendent Miss Danielle. Her initial audition is terrible due to a lack of acting experience, and the role initially goes to a more experienced performer named Serena Cherry.

Mona eventually secures the role as a backup actress on short notice following Serena’s sudden exit. Paul Giamatti plays Jerry, a demanding director who quickly realizes Mona needs intensive guidance. According to Variety, Jerry forces Mona to improvise and confront her fears during a rehearsal where he pushes her to demand a rent check. That interaction yields the character’s iconic line, Rent’s due!, helping Mona break through her emotional walls and discover her own worth.

For Julianne Moore, taking on the musical comedy required singing live on set in front of seasoned stage actors and singers. The cast included Colton Ryan, Bonnie Milligan, Halle Bailey, and Bernadette Peters. Moore admitted initial nervousness about the requirement, recalling that she felt she was going to swallow her own tongue.

The project marks a full-circle return to musical theater for Moore, who first performed on stage in middle school in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and attended the Telluride Film Festival in 1994 with Vanya on 42nd Street. Moore explained that feelings in a musical are so big that words no longer sustain you, forcing characters to sing. This theatrical experience directly influenced her decision to star in Faydra, a modern retelling of a Greek myth scheduled to debut off-Broadway next year, marking her return to the stage after a 20-year hiatus.
