Regret and Shifting Preferences
Following Frans Timmermans’ resignation, approximately one in ten voters of the GroenLinks-PvdA party now express regret over their vote,a significantly higher percentage than the overall regret rate of 4 percent among all voters. One voter expressed a desire to have supported D66 more strongly in retrospect, stating, “In retrospect, I would have preferred to make D66 a bit bigger.”
This sentiment suggests a potential realignment of preferences within the left-leaning electorate. The survey data indicates a strong desire for GroenLinks-pvda to actively engage in forming a governing coalition, with 87 percent of their voters supporting this approach, while only 5 percent favor remaining in opposition.
Desire for D66 Influence
The strong preference for governing, coupled with regret over past voting choices, points to a desire among GroenLinks-pvda voters for D66 to play a importent role in the upcoming coalition negotiations. This suggests voters believe D66’s inclusion could better represent their interests and values.
Succession and Leadership
With Timmermans stepping down, attention has turned to potential successors. According to the survey,62 percent of voters identify Jesse Klaver as a desired leader for the party.voters appreciate Klaver’s willingness to yield to Timmermans during the merger between GroenLinks and PvdA.
Survey Methodology
The findings are based on a survey conducted by the RTL News Panel on October 30 and 31, 2025. The survey included responses from over 25,000 panel members, with a subset of 2,500 identifying as GroenLinks-PvdA voters. The data was weighted to ensure representativeness across key demographic variables: age, gender, education level, employment status, and political preference as demonstrated by voting behavior in the 2025 House of Representatives elections.
The RTL News Panel comprises more than 64,000 members. Interested individuals can register to participate in future research.
