A 21-year-old woman faces a manslaughter charge after an 18-year-old Air Force Academy cadet was killed in a jet ski accident on Lake Grapevine, Texas. Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, is accused in the death of Ava Moore. The incident has drawn attention amid increased federal scrutiny of immigration.
gonzalez was allegedly driving a jet ski at high speed near the shoreline Sunday when it struck Moore, who was kayaking, according to Texas Game Warden Capt. Joseph Quintero. Moore later died at a hospital.
Authorities say Gonzalez and a passenger left the scene. The passenger returned and was interviewed by police as first responders aided Moore. Gonzalez then allegedly entered a vehicle driven by Maikel Coello Perozo, 21. Their vehicle crashed into two others as they fled, officials said.
Both Gonzalez and Perozo were arrested Tuesday in Dallas. Perozo is charged with collision involving vehicle damage and hindering apprehension,Quintero said.
Federal immigration officials are involved because Gonzalez and Perozo are Venezuelan nationals who are in the U.S. without documentation.
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant DHS secretary, stated, “Daikerlyn Gonzalez and Maikel Perozo should have never been in our country and ava Moore should be alive today preparing for the Air Force Academy…The previous administration’s open border policies have cost too many Americans their lives.”
ICE lodged detainers against both suspects, who are now in removal proceedings. Gonzalez entered the U.S. on Sept. 28, 2023, and Perozo on Jan. 22, 2023, according to ICE statements. Both were released pending immigration hearings.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott suggested capital punishment for Gonzalez on X, saying, “Welcome to texas…Here’s yoru Death Penalty.”
Manslaughter, a second-degree felony, carries a sentence of two to 20 years in prison in Texas.
