Jetlag’s Impact on Metabolism: New Research Reveals Key Insights

Jetlag’s Impact on Metabolism: New Research Reveals Key Insights

November 20, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

A study from the University of Surrey and the University of Aberdeen shows that changes to our body clock, like those seen in jetlag, affect our metabolism. The research involved participants adjusting their bedtime and mealtimes by 5 hours.

The study, published in iScience, found that while metabolism showed temporary effects from this time shift, recovery happened within 2-3 days. In contrast, the brain’s main clock and feelings of sleepiness did not recover within 5 days.

Professor Jonathan Johnston stressed the need for a consistent sleep schedule. He noted that even small changes in sleep timing can impact metabolism. However, the effects of jetlag on metabolism recover faster than issues with sleep and alertness. Understanding how body rhythms affect health can guide our choices for better lifestyle habits. By improving our sleep and eating schedules, we can enhance our overall well-being.

This research highlights the importance of paying attention to how our routines affect our health. Simple changes in sleep and meal times can make a significant difference in how we feel.
