  ‌ A relentless heat ‌wave gripped the East Coast‍ on⁣ Tuesday,shattering
‍ records and pushing temperatures into the triple digits. More than 150
million people were under heat ⁤warnings as the National Weather Service
anticipated numerous locations would either tie or⁢ break daily high
temperature records.
‍ ‍

⁤ New York City’s John⁤ F. Kennedy⁢ Airport reached 100 degrees Fahrenheit
⁣ shortly after noon,⁢ marking the first time as 2013 that the
‌ ⁣airport has hit that mark.

⁢ Ryan Maue, a private meteorologist and former NOAA chief scientist,
‍ ⁤ ⁤noted the widespread impact. “Every East coast state today from Maine
⁤ to⁣ Florida has a chance of 100‍ degree actual temperature,” Maue ‍said,
⁢ emphasizing⁢ the infrequency of‍ such heat in Maine.
‌ ‍

‌ ‍ If Central Park reaches⁢ 100 ⁣degrees, it would be the earliest date on
‌ record for the‍ park ⁤to hit that milestone.
⁢

‌ ‌ The current heat ‍wave follows 39 new or tied heat records⁢ set⁤ on
‍ monday. Meteorologists warn that the lack of nighttime ⁣cooling,
⁢⁤ exacerbated⁢ by humidity, poses a important risk.

⁢ ‍Jacob Asherman, a meteorologist ‍at the Weather Prediction Center,
described‍ the situation as “everything stacked ⁢on top of itself,”
⁢ highlighting the ⁤extreme nature ‍of ⁢the⁣ event. Maue characterized the
‌ ⁢ ‍ oppressive‌ heat dome ⁤as ‌pushing the heat downwards.

‍Our crews have been ‍working around the clock in sweltering
⁢ temperatures, and have restored service to more than 34,700 customers
⁣ ‍ in the bronx since the heat wave began.‌ We urge customers⁤ to use
⁤ ⁢ energy ‌wisely during the heat and conserve ⁣where they can.⁤ More ⁤info:…

Con Edison ⁣urged New York City customers to conserve energy by limiting
‌ ⁤ ⁣the use of major appliances and setting air conditioners to the highest
‌ agreeable temperature.

 ⁤

Voters brave heat to cast ballots

‌⁤ The heat coincided with New York City’s ‌primary elections. ‍In Jackson
⁢ ‌ Heights, Queens, Rekha⁢ Malhotra, an event DJ, campaigned for mayoral
‌ ⁣ candidate ⁣Zohran Mamdani, equipped with⁤ a portable electric fan.

“It’s 90 bazillion degrees and here I am,” Malhotra⁣ said, also showing
off a spray bottle for cooling relief.

‌Bernadette Woods Placky, chief meteorologist at Climate Central,
⁤ ⁤ emphasized the cumulative impact of prolonged‌ heat and humidity. “The
longer the⁣ heat lasts, the ‌more it wears on the body, the more it wears
‍ on ‍the health, the more it where’s under the energy bill,” Woods Placky
said.
‌

‍ ‌ Amtrak reported ⁣delays ⁣due to⁢ heat-related speed ‍restrictions on⁢ routes
through Washington,‍ Philadelphia, and New York. In New Hampshire, two
‌ 16-year-old⁢ hikers were rescued from a mountain in Jaffrey after
‍ succumbing to the heat,⁤ according to the ⁤New Hampshire Fish and Game
⁢ Department.
‌

Tips to save energy

Con Edison offers these energy-saving tips:

  • Limit the ‍use of multiple air conditioners ⁤whenever⁣ possible.
  • ⁤ ‍ ⁣ Set⁤ your air conditioner to the highest comfortable temperature.
    ⁤

  • ⁢ ‌ Wait to use ‍energy-intensive appliances like ⁤dishwashers ⁢and laundry
‌ ⁢ machines until late in the evening.

  • Use‍ only one large appliance⁢ at ‍a ‍time.
  • ⁢ ⁣ Even when using AC,use ceiling⁢ and other fans ⁢to⁢ provide additional
     ⁤ ‍ ⁢ cooling and better⁢ circulation.

  • ⁢ ‌ Turn off AC⁣ units, lights and other appliances ⁢when⁤ not ⁤at home and
⁣ use ⁣a timer‌ to turn on your AC about a half-hour before arriving
     ⁣ home.
    ‍⁢

  • Keep ⁤shades,⁢ blinds and curtains closed.

What’s next

While Tuesday marked ⁣the peak of the heat wave, residents ‌are advised
to stay vigilant and continue practicing heat safety measures as
⁢ temperatures remain elevated in the coming ‌days.
