Kavita Kumari, a 30-year-old widow from Soso village in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district, ran 1,600 metres barefoot in a blue saree during a practice trial, finishing in six minutes to secure an ‘Excellent’ grade, as reported by The Indian Express. The trial, held on October 4, 2026, at Sidhu Kanhu Stadium, was organized to help candidates prepare for the upcoming Jharkhand Home Guard recruitment physical test scheduled between October 24 and November 5, 2026.
The Viral Run At Sidhu Kanhu Stadium
Kumari arrived at the stadium wearing a traditional saree and slippers, feeling initially uncomfortable among competitors equipped in proper tracksuits, sports shoes, and carrying water bottles. A spectator filmed her passing other runners barefoot on the uneven ground, and the video quickly spread across social media platforms. I was very nervous as soon as I reached the stadium. People were looking at the saree, and I was looking at them in tracksuits with bags, bottles and shoes on their feet,
Kumari stated, according to The Indian Express.
While female applicants must complete the 1,600-metre distance within 10 minutes to pass, Kumari finished well ahead of the cutoff. NDTV and The Times of India reported her time as six minutes, while ETV Bharat and The New Indian Express recorded it at six minutes and 45 seconds, comfortably beating the benchmark. Ankit Singh, organizer of the October 4 trial, noted that approximately 1,900 candidates participated, including about 1,100 women, with 50 to 60 women running in sarees.

Financial Hardship And Daily Routine In Soso Village
The family accumulated roughly Rs 6 lakh in debt due to medical treatments. Six months after Deepak’s death, his younger brother also passed away, and her sister-in-law subsequently left the household. Kumari now supports her elderly in-laws and her two children—who attend a private school—by working as a daily wage laborer at a local brick kiln. She previously worked as a private security guard in Ramgarh town but quit because late shift hours lacked transport back to her village.
Without funds for athletic gear or professional coaching, Kumari built her training regimen independently. She wakes up around 4:00 am daily to practice running on rough terrain near Soso village. To learn proper running techniques, she relies on digital tutorials, stating, I ask my children to open YouTube and play the videos for me, as I hardly know how to use it.
She later connected with Ajay Karmali, a 38-year-old Home Guard and coach running the HMT Physical Academy in Dulmi, who offered her free guidance and urged her to test the stadium ground beforehand.
Local Leaders Provide Kumari with Athletic Gear
Following widespread attention from the viral video, public figures and local leaders stepped in to assist. Dumri MLA Jairam Kumar Mahato contacted Kumari by phone and provided a tracksuit, T-shirt, and running shoes. The Times of India reported that Kumari wore the gifted sports gear during her training session at Sidhu-Kanhu Ground, noting that running in proper athletic wear is noticeably more comfortable than running in a sari.
The Ramgarh district recruitment drive offers 284 Home Guard positions against more than 16,000 applicants. State regulations reserve 50 percent of all vacancies for female applicants, alongside an additional 5 percent allocation specifically designated for widows and divorced women. The selection process begins with physical efficiency trials—consisting of the 1,600-metre run, long jump, high jump, and shot put—followed by a written examination.

Physical Evaluations for Home Guard Recruitment Begin October 24
Official physical evaluations for the Ramgarh Home Guard recruitment are scheduled to run from October 24 through November 5, 2026. While Kumari has demonstrated top-tier running times during practice trials, it remains undetermined how she and other rural candidates will perform across the remaining high jump, long jump, and shot put events under official testing conditions. Whether her training and newly acquired athletic gear will translate into a final appointment is uncertain as the selection dates approach.
