Brambly Hedge Celebrates 45 Years of Enchanting Readers

The beloved world of Brambly Hedge, a series of children’s books depicting the idyllic lives of a community of mice in the English countryside, is marking its 45th anniversary. Created by British author and illustrator Jill Barklem, the first four books – Spring Story, Summer Story, Autumn Story, and Winter Story – were originally published in 1980.

Brambly Hedge has captivated generations with its detailed watercolour illustrations and gentle narratives. The books follow the mice as they navigate the seasons, resolving conflicts and working together to achieve common goals. Notably, the stories feature no unkind characters or predators, creating a safe and nurturing world for young readers.

Barklem described Brambly Hedge as a “loving and caring society,” a sentiment that resonates throughout the series. The initial publications were released in a miniature format (17.6×14.6 cm / 5.7×6.9 in), with later additions, such as The Secret Staircase and The High Hills, published in a larger size (24×19.5 cm / 7.6×9.5 in). The Secret Staircase (1983) follows Primrose and Wilfred as they rehearse a poem in the attic.

The complete collection of eight books – including Sea Story and Poppy’s Babies, both released in the miniature format – is now available in larger formats, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books in both the United Kingdom and the United States. A recent post on social media highlighted a glimpse of snowdrops, hinting at the continuing seasonal inspiration for the series.

Beyond the books themselves, the world of Brambly Hedge is expanding. A behind-the-scenes look at the miniature world, featuring never-before-seen stories, sketches, and archive content, is now available for fans. The 2026 Brambly Hedge diaries and calendars are also available, bringing a touch of the hedgerow’s magic to everyday planning.

This year, Brambly Hedge is also featured at National Trust Petworth House as part of their Christmas Enchantment. An Epping Forest Sculpture Trail showcases artwork inspired by the series. A new Winter Story puzzle, featuring 1000 pieces, is also available for purchase.

The enduring appeal of Brambly Hedge lies in its ability to transport readers to a tranquil and charming world. The series continues to delight both children and parents alike, offering a timeless escape into the heart of the English countryside. The latest blog post from the hedgerow notes that Midwinter has arrived, marking the close of the 45th anniversary year.
