First⁣ Lady Jill Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine after nearly two hours in the country, concluding her tour of ⁣Eastern ⁢Europe. The trip aimed to demonstrate support ‍for American troops and Ukrainian ​refugees impacted by the ongoing conflict.

Earlier​ on Sunday, Biden⁣ engaged with volunteers in Slovakia who are assisting‌ refugees. She⁣ also visited a school where ⁤children were creating Mother’s ​Day crafts.‍ “The​ hearts ⁣of the American people are with the mothers of Ukraine,” Biden told those assembled.

The classroom was filled with​ women‌ whose husbands and fathers remained in Ukraine to fight.​ One woman conveyed to reporters‍ traveling with​ Biden ​that the ⁢First Lady’s visit was encouraging, stating, “It means support for us… We are very tired. this is emotional support for us.”

Biden’s visit follows a series of visits from high-ranking U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Antony ⁣Blinken, Defense‍ Secretary Lloyd Austin, and House Speaker⁢ Nancy Pelosi, all aimed at showing solidarity with Ukraine.

the visit coincided with increased bloodshed in Ukraine, including the bombing of a school in Bilohorivka where civilians were sheltering. A⁢ regional official reported ⁢that as many as 60 ⁣people are feared‍ dead.

“We have called out the Russians⁢ very early on for committing war crimes, and this contributes to that,” U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said to CNN regarding the bombing. “We’re⁣ going to⁣ continue to work with the Ukrainian prosecutors and others to document evidence of their war ⁢crimes so that they‌ can be held accountable. This just adds to the long list that we ‌already have.”
