Jill Biden’s Ex-Husband Charged with Murder of His Wife
William Stevenson, the ex-husband of former First Lady Jill Biden, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Linda Stevenson. The charges were filed on Monday, , following an extensive investigation, according to New Castle County Police.
Police responded to a reported domestic dispute at a residence on Idlewood Road in Oak Hill, Wilmington, Delaware, on , at approximately 11:16 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Linda Stevenson, 64, unresponsive in the living room. Despite attempts to save her life, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was subsequently turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science for an autopsy, though a cause of death has not yet been released.
William Stevenson, 77, was taken into custody at the same residence and is currently being held at the Howard Young Correctional Institution after failing to post a $500,000 cash bail. We see currently unclear if he has retained legal counsel.
The indictment against Stevenson is the result of a “weekslong investigation” conducted by New Castle County police. According to reports, Stevenson himself initially called authorities and cooperated with the investigation.
A representative for former President Joe Biden and Jill Biden did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Jill Stevenson (née Jacobs) and Bill Stevenson married in , while she was a student at the University of Delaware and he was 23 years old. The couple divorced in after five years of marriage. Jill Biden met then-Delaware Senator Joe Biden in March 1975.
Following his divorce from Jill Biden, Bill Stevenson went on to found The Stone Balloon Club, a popular college bar near the University of Delaware in Newark. The club hosted performances by prominent musicians including Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and The Allman Brothers Band over several decades. Jill Biden reportedly attempted to maintain a half-share ownership in the Stone Balloon but was unsuccessful.
