Jill Sobule, ‘I Kissed a Girl’ Singer-Songwriter, Dies at 66
Jill Sobule, the singer-songwriter known for her satirical hit “Supermodel,” featured in the movie Clueless, and the groundbreaking single “I Kissed a Girl,” has died at 66. Sobule’s manager, John Porter, confirmed her death.
Death Under inquiry
Sobule’s body was discovered Thursday in a Woodbury, Minn., home following a house fire. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
Tributes Pour In
Porter, in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, described Sobule as “a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture.” He added, “I was having so much fun working with her. I lost a client and a friend today. I hope her music, memory and legacy continue to live on and inspire others.”
Upcoming performance canceled
According to her website, Sobule was scheduled to perform Friday in Denver, her hometown. The performance was intended to showcase songs from her autobiographical stage musical, F*ck 7th Grade, which received a Drama Desk award nomination in 2023.
A Diverse musical Legacy
Sobule leaves behind a diverse body of work, encompassing both deeply personal and socially conscious themes. Her recording career spanned over a dozen albums, beginning in 1990 with “Things here Are Different,” produced by Todd Rundgren.
“I Kissed a Girl” and Chart Success
Her self-titled 1995 album featured “supermodel” and “I Kissed a Girl.” The latter is widely considered one of the first openly LGBTQ-themed songs to break into the Billboard Top 20, peaking at No. 20 that year.
Later Recognition
The song gained renewed attention in 2008 when Katy Perry released a single with the same title.
