The Indianapolis Colts will honor former owner Jim Irsay by inducting him into the team’s Ring of Honor. The ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 7, during the Colts’ season opener against the Miami Dolphins.
Irsay,who died May 21,would have turned 66 on Friday. He becomes the 20th member of the Ring of Honor, joining his father, Robert Irsay, the inaugural honoree in 1996. Jim Irsay’s leadership and his significant role in the NFL will be celebrated.
“There was no bigger advocate for the Colts,the NFL,the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana than our dad,Jim Irsay,” said Irsay’s daughters and current team owners Carlie Irsay-Gordon,Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson in a statement. “It’s only fitting that he now joins the other amazing Colts legends in our Ring of Honor who contributed so much to our franchise and our community over the past four decades.”
Irsay took over ownership of the Colts in 1997 at age 37, becoming the NFL’s youngest owner at the time. During his tenure, the Colts won Super Bowl XLI in 2006, secured 10 division titles, and claimed two AFC championships. His contributions cemented his role as a key figure in the franchise’s history.
