AKRON, ohio - Miguel Angel Jimenez claimed his fourth PGA Tour Champions victory of the season at the Kaulig Companies Championship on Sunday, prevailing over Steven Alker in a thrilling playoff. Jimenez sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole to secure the win.
Jimenez, 61, forced the playoff wiht clutch putts on the 17th and 18th holes at Firestone South. He trailed Alker by two strokes after Alker birdied the par-5 16th. Jimenez responded with a 10-foot birdie on the 17th and an 18-foot birdie on the 18th.
Jimenez and Alker, 53, both entered the final round tied for the led. Each carded a 2-under 68,finishing the major championship at 10-under 270. After both parred the first playoff hole on the 18th, Jimenez missed an 18-foot birdie attempt, and Alker made a 3 1/2-foot putt to extend the playoff.
Alker’s missed 20-foot birdie putt, after recovering from the trees, set the stage for Jimenez’s winning moment.
This marks Jimenez’s third major title, adding to his 2018 victories at the Regions Tradition and the Senior British Open. The win also secures his place in next year’s The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass. The Spanish star now boasts 17 career victories on the 50-and-over tour.
Earlier this year, jimenez defeated Alker by two strokes at the Trophy Hassan II in Morocco. He also won the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach,California,in March and the Principal Charity Classic in Des Moines,Iowa,three weeks ago.
Stewart Cink finished third at 8-under after a final round of 66, while Steve Flesch was another stroke back after a 65.
