Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward, 33, was arrested in Magnolia, Texas, on thursday and charged with third-degree felony assault related to alleged family violence. He was booked at Montgomery County jail and released later that day after posting $30,000 bail.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a reported assault at ward’s residence. The victim, identified as Ward’s fiancée, told authorities that Ward assaulted, strangled, and threatened her. She has as filed for an emergency protective order.
The Houston Texans acknowledged the situation in a statement, saying, “We are aware of the report involving Jimmie Ward. We are gathering more information and have no further comment at this time.” The team is evaluating the situation regarding the veteran safety and his future with the team.
Ward, a key presence in the Texans’ secondary, signed a two-year, $13 million contract with the team in March 2023 after playing nine seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He became a team captain ahead of the 2023 season and signed a one-year, $10.5 million extension in August 2024. In two seasons with Houston, ward has started 20 games, recording 98 total tackles and three interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Despite battling injuries, Ward has been a consistent contributor under coach DeMeco Ryans.
Ward was originally a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Northern Illinois.
