Widow, Trustee Clash Over Jimmy Buffett Estate Management
A heated legal battle has emerged concerning the late Jimmy Buffett’s $275 million estate. Jane Buffett, the singer-songwriter’s widow, is seeking the removal of Richard Mozenter as co-trustee. Simultaneously, Mozenter has petitioned to revoke Jane’s status as co-trustee and personal representative of the estate, escalating the legal dispute.
The dueling lawsuits, filed in California and Florida, expose deep divisions over the management of Buffett’s assets. Jane Buffett’s lawsuit alleges that Mozenter failed to provide essential financial information, leaving her “in the dark” regarding her own finances. She claims it took 16 months to receive an income projection from the trust.
According to the suit, Mozenter’s initial forecast estimated a net income of less than $2 million annually, a figure Jane Buffett contests, arguing it doesn’t adequately account for distributions from Margaritaville, where the trust holds a notable 20% ownership stake. the estate dispute raises questions about the competence and intentions of the co-trustee.
Jane Buffett’s legal team suggests that if the trust’s returns align with Mozenter’s projections,it would indicate either incompetence or a lack of commitment to her best interests. She also accuses Mozenter of disrespectful behavior during their interactions regarding the estate planning.

Mozenter’s petition paints a different picture, alleging that Jimmy Buffett had reservations about Jane’s ability to manage his assets. The petition claims Buffett intentionally structured the trust to limit her control. It further accuses jane of hostility and a lack of cooperation in Mozenter’s efforts to administer the trust.
Andrew Comiter, Mozenter’s attorney, declined to comment directly, stating that his client’s filings “speak for themselves.”
The dispute follows Buffett’s death on Sept.1, 2023, at age 76, after a battle with Merkel Cell Skin Cancer.
