This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Mariah Carey’s hit song ’All I Want for Christmas Is You’, which catapulted her to fame as the ‘Queen of Christmas’. According to The New York Times, Carey will embark on a 21-day tour starting on November 6, featuring Christmas-themed songs, including her iconic hit.
Carey announced her tour on Instagram on November 1, posting “It’s Time!!!” to signal her return as the Christmas Queen. The tour will primarily feature Christmas songs, including ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’, which was released in 1994.
‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ is one of the most widely broadcast songs globally during the Christmas season. In 2019, it reached the top of Billboard’s main single ranking ‘Hot 100’ 25 years after its release.
The song has been a massive hit since its release, with sales of the album ‘Merry Christmas’ reaching 18 million copies. Although it didn’t initially take the top spot, Carey’s Christmas anthem remained popular even before it rocketed to the top of the charts in 2019.
Carey’s song stayed on the Hot 100 chart for 65 weeks, setting a record for the longest stay on the single chart across all genres, including R&B and rock. The song was also featured in the hit Christmas movie ‘Love Actually’ in 2003, introducing it to a new generation of fans.
The song has been remade by over 400 artists, with the melody created by Brazilian composer Walter Afanasieeff and the lyrics written by Carey herself. Carey explained that the lyrics, ‘All I need is you’, were inspired by her unhappy childhood experiences.
Regarding the song’s enduring popularity, Carey expressed her gratitude to fans who have been listening to her song since July and stated her desire to continue performing Christmas performances in the future.
