Jo Dunkel, a Swiss entrepreneur based in Basel, has developed a line of premium non-alcoholic distillates under the label edition dunkel. These water-based spirits are crafted from sustainably cultivated ingredients and certified wild-collected botanicals, focusing on complex, aroma-driven profiles rather than serving as alcohol-free versions of traditional spirits.
Since 2020, Dunkel has operated as a career changer, developing three distinct products that are all bio-certified. The process involves creating high-quality distillates in small batches, utilizing unusual flavor combinations to provide a satisfying drinking experience without the presence of alcohol.
Industry Recognition and Awards
The brand has gained significant traction within the professional bar scene and specialized retail shops. The products have received high-level industry accolades, including gold medals and best in class
designations.
According to reports from the Craft Spirits Berlin Awards 2026, the product TSCHETSCHA & received a gold award. The Mixology 1/2026 publication highlighted the brand’s achievement with a best in class
award for its non-alcoholic offerings.
Production and Philosophy
The development of edition dunkel was driven by the goal of creating a sophisticated drinking experience that does not rely on the removal of alcohol from existing spirits. Instead, the brand focuses on water-based distillates that emphasize bio-quality and the use of wild-harvested botanicals.
The current product lineup consists of three bio-certified offerings: TSCHETSCHA &, LAIN&FÜM and STADTBALKON.
Distribution and Expansion
To expand its reach, edition dunkel has entered into a distribution partnership with humbelschnaps. This agreement covers the distribution of the alcohol-free distillates across Switzerland and the European Union.
The partnership is described as a combination of two complementary approaches, pairing Dunkel’s innovative, sustainable, and creative recipes with an established distribution network to bring these non-alcoholic flavor profiles to a wider market.
