Updated June 08, 2025
Barcelona’s Joan Miró Foundation is marking its 50th anniversary with a year of celebrations honoring the renowned surrealist artist. The foundation, established by Miró himself in 1975, has become a cultural landmark.
The Joan Miró Foundation, situated in a modernist building on Montjuic hill, houses a meaningful collection of Miró’s paintings, sculptures, and other works. The planned events include exhibitions, concerts, and a sunrise viewing at the hilltop location.
“In these 50 years, we’ve gone from being an artist’s dream to becoming a cultural reference point in Barcelona and around the world,” said Marko Daniel, the foundation’s director.
Miró sought to reconnect with his native Barcelona by creating a center for contemporary art studies. Architect josep Lluis Sert designed the building.

The foundation quietly opened on June 10, 1975, at Miró’s request, avoiding a formal ceremony during Franco’s dictatorship. A more celebratory inauguration occurred after Franco’s death.
The anniversary celebrations begin with an exhibition of photos, press clippings, and architectural plans that trace the institution’s history. The foundation will also open its doors at sunrise on Sunday.
“Miró left us not only a building, a unique institution, and a remarkable collection, but also a way of seeing the world,” Daniel said.
US ties explored
A highlight of the anniversary will be the October opening of “Miró and the United States,” an exhibition exploring the surrealist artist’s connections with America. The exhibition will feature works by American artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko alongside Miró’s pieces.
“This will become the most significant exhibition on Miró ever held in the United States,” said Ana Ara, the foundation’s director of artistic programming.
After its Barcelona debut, the show will travel to the Phillips collection in Washington,D.C., remaining on display until July 2026.
Next year, the foundation will reorganize its permanent collection, adding interpretive material to help visitors understand Miró’s creative process. Miró initially drew inspiration from artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cezanne before developing his unique style.
André Breton, leader of the surrealism movement, onc called Miró “the most surrealist of us all.”
What’s next
The Joan Miró Foundation plans to continue its mission of promoting contemporary art and preserving Miró’s legacy through exhibitions, educational programs, and research initiatives.
