João almeida⁢ Secures Overall Victory at Tour de suisse

João almeida of UAE Team Emirates-XRG clinched the overall title at the Tour de Suisse, overcoming ⁤an initial setback to dominate the race. His performance, along with strong showings from Oscar Onley and Felix ‌Gall, sets the stage ‌for the upcoming Tour de France.

Almeida faced early pressure from rivals Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling), Ben O’Connor (Team Jayco AlUla), and Lennard Kaven (Lidl-Trek). Despite Kévin Vauquelin briefly taking the yellow jersey, almeida steadily closed the ‍gap.

A six-second time ‌bonus​ for second place⁤ on⁢ Stage 3, behind Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek), marked AlmeidaS ⁣first gain. He then ⁢seized a ​solo victory the next day, finishing a minute ahead of his main competitor and earning ‌an additional 10-second bonus.

By ⁣Stage 5, Almeida ‌had reduced ⁢his deficit to just 39 seconds, moving into third overall. Reflecting on ‌his week, Almeida said, “My team did a perfect job, they ‍were super strong, and we can be proud of what we did⁣ here.”

The decisive moment came during Sunday’s uphill time trial. Almeida dominated the ⁢course, beating runner-up felix Gall (Decathlon Ag2r La ‍Mondiale) by 24 seconds. Vauquelin finished fourth,⁢ 1 minute and ‍40 seconds behind.

Almeida’s stage win secured him the points jersey and the overall victory,finishing 1 minute and 7 seconds ahead. “I think⁢ at the end of the⁣ day ‌it is like a ⁢lesson,” Almeida said. “You should never give up.⁣ Sometimes⁢ things go wrong… You just need to keep⁤ trying.”

Vauquelin, despite⁣ losing the lead, acknowledged the valuable experience.”When you follow somebody like João, he tried to make me crack but ‌I sustained ‍it,” he said of⁣ Saturday’s stage. He added,”It is a good step for my career… I have got ⁢to be happy with this.”

Oscar Onley⁢ (Team ⁣Picnic PostNL) also celebrated a successful race, including a stage⁤ win and ‍a podium finish.”I think it is a step up compared ‍to my results in the past,” Onley said, noting ⁤his improved physical performance.

Felix ⁤Gall (DECATHLON-AG2R LA MONDIALE) expressed ⁣similar encouragement.⁣ “For⁤ sure I ⁣am⁢ really happy with this week,” he said, looking ahead to the ​Tour de France.

Almeida, with nine victories this year, trails only​ Tadej Pogacar in the 2025 tally. However, ⁣he remains focused on supporting his teammate at the tour de France. “The goal there is just to help him as much as I can,” Almeida stated.

Almeida’s recent victory marks his third stage race win this year, following successes at the Itzulia Basque Country race and the Tour de Romandie.
