St Helens Face Injury Crisis Before Leeds Rhinos Super League ‌Match

Updated June 18,2025

St Helens are ‍grappling with a growing⁣ injury list ahead of their ⁣Super League clash against Leeds Rhinos on Friday.⁤ Forward Joe Batchelor is the latest casualty, set ‌to miss four weeks due to a calf tear. ⁤This injury impacts the team’s depth and strategic options.

Head coach ⁢Paul Wellens confirmed the bad news after a scan revealed the extent ⁤of Batchelor’s injury, sustained during the game against Salford Red Devils. “On the physio’s first look we ⁣were ‌expecting it to be worse so we will take a little bit of comfort in that, ‌but he ⁢could be out for four weeks,” Wellens said. The team is⁣ now focused on adjusting their lineup to compensate for Batchelor’s absence. The ⁤team’s role in the Super‌ League is now threatened.

Adding ‍to ‍the⁢ Saints’ woes, fellow forward Curtis Sironen is also a doubt. Sironen suffered back spasms during the Salford match. ‌Wellens said he will give Sironen until the last minute to prove his fitness, but admitted the outlook “signs are not looking good.” The team’s injury list is ‍growing.

St⁢ Helens are⁤ also missing half-back and kicker George Whitby. He is ⁤recovering from a⁤ head injury ⁣assessment he failed in greater Manchester. “He is recovering well and ticking‌ the⁣ boxes. Once he is back fit and firing he can be a very important player for us,” Wellens added. The team’s performance is suffering.

What’s next

St Helens‍ will ‌need to dig deep and rely on their remaining squad members as ‌they face Leeds Rhinos. The team hopes Sironen ‍can recover in time, but they are prepared‌ to‍ adapt their strategy if⁤ he is unavailable.
