Joe ⁣Flacco Faces Browns Quarterback Competition

Updated May 29, 2025

Veteran ⁢quarterback Joe Flacco, 40, is set to compete for the⁤ Cleveland Browns’ starting job‍ in 2025. He will be up against Kenny Pickett, a former first-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

Flacco brings significant NFL ⁣starting experience ‍to the Browns, having started 191 games. He previously⁢ played for Cleveland⁤ under head⁤ coach Kevin Stefanski in 2023.

When asked about potentially mentoring the younger quarterbacks, Flacco offered a candid response, acknowledging the loaded nature of the question.

“It’s a good question to bait somebody into answering,‍ and no matter how they ‍answer it, it kind of makes⁣ the guy‌ that’s answering it look bad,”‌ Flacco said.”If ⁤I say, ‘I⁢ don’t ⁤want to be a mentor,’ I look⁢ bad. If I say, ‘I do want to be a mentor,’ then I look⁣ like ⁢an idiot that doesn’t care about being good and⁢ playing football. ‌so,⁢ it’s one of those questions ⁣that no matter what⁣ I say, you guys can⁢ write what ⁢you ⁤want ⁢to write about it.”

Flacco ‍added that leading‌ by example is the most effective way ⁣to mentor, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating a strong work ‍ethic.

“The best way to be a mentor, ‍honestly, is to show people how you go to work,” Flacco said.

Before joining ‍the Browns, ‍Flacco played for‌ the Indianapolis Colts in‍ 2024, where he⁢ started six games and ‌totaled 1,761 passing yards and ⁣12 touchdowns.

His past also includes stints ⁣with the Baltimore Ravens, where the team ⁢drafted Lamar Jackson, the New York Jets, ‌and a previous tenure with the Browns in 2023. During that earlier time with Cleveland, Flacco started five games, contributing 1,616‌ passing yards and⁤ 13 touchdowns, helping the team secure a playoff berth.

What’s next

The Browns will kick off the 2025⁣ season at home against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7.
