Joe Flacco Faces Browns Quarterback Competition
Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, 40, is set to compete for the Cleveland Browns’ starting job in 2025. He will be up against Kenny Pickett, a former first-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers, and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
Flacco brings significant NFL starting experience to the Browns, having started 191 games. He previously played for Cleveland under head coach Kevin Stefanski in 2023.
When asked about potentially mentoring the younger quarterbacks, Flacco offered a candid response, acknowledging the loaded nature of the question.
“It’s a good question to bait somebody into answering, and no matter how they answer it, it kind of makes the guy that’s answering it look bad,” Flacco said.”If I say, ‘I don’t want to be a mentor,’ I look bad. If I say, ‘I do want to be a mentor,’ then I look like an idiot that doesn’t care about being good and playing football. so, it’s one of those questions that no matter what I say, you guys can write what you want to write about it.”
Flacco added that leading by example is the most effective way to mentor, emphasizing the importance of demonstrating a strong work ethic.
“The best way to be a mentor, honestly, is to show people how you go to work,” Flacco said.
Before joining the Browns, Flacco played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2024, where he started six games and totaled 1,761 passing yards and 12 touchdowns.
His past also includes stints with the Baltimore Ravens, where the team drafted Lamar Jackson, the New York Jets, and a previous tenure with the Browns in 2023. During that earlier time with Cleveland, Flacco started five games, contributing 1,616 passing yards and 13 touchdowns, helping the team secure a playoff berth.
