Joe Root Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s Record for Most Fourth-Innings Runs in Test Cricket
Joe Root Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar’s Fourth-Innings Record in Test Cricket
Joe Root, England’s star batter, has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most fourth-innings runs in Test cricket. In a recent match against New Zealand, Root scored an unbeaten 23, bringing his total fourth-innings runs to 1,630, breaking Tendulkar’s record of 1,625 runs.
Root reached this achievement in just 49 fourth-innings matches, while Tendulkar played in 60. This remarkable feat places Root at the top of the list for fourth-innings runs, ahead of other notable players like Alastair Cook (1,611 runs in 53 innings), Graeme Smith (1,611 runs in 41 innings), and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (1,580 runs in 49 innings).
Now 33 years old, Root achieved this milestone during his 150th Test match. He has accumulated 12,777 Test runs overall, making him the fifth-highest run-scorer in Test history. The all-time leader remains Tendulkar, with 15,921 runs from 200 Tests.
Despite this achievement, Root’s match was not flawless; he was dismissed for a duck in the first innings. This unfortunate occurrence places him in the company of other famous players like Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, who also had ducks in their milestone matches.
Root’s performance highlights his skill and resilience, especially in challenging fourth-innings situations. As England’s leading run-scorer, his contributions continue to shape his legacy as one of the finest batters of the modern era.
