Joel Embiid Addresses Team Criticism Amid Philadelphia 76ers’ Struggles
Embiid Reflects on Team Meeting and Recent Loss
Joel Embiid spoke to the media after the Philadelphia 76ers lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, 117-111. He addressed the recent team meeting where Tyrese Maxey criticized him for being late. Embiid took accountability for his actions but expressed frustration over details of the meeting leaking to the public.
Embiid said, “Whoever leaked that is a real piece of s—.” He emphasized that the meeting focused on accountability among teammates. He acknowledged the need to improve, stating, “I need to be perfect. I need to be on point.”
The 76ers have struggled this season, holding a record of 2-12 after losing five straight games. Embiid noted that conversations around the team often focus on issues outside of basketball. He expressed annoyance at repeated questions about team dynamics. “I’m just trying to focus on basketball,” he said.
In Wednesday’s game, Embiid had a standout performance, scoring 35 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, indicating he is capable of playing at a high level. However, the team faces challenges, including injuries to key players like Paul George, who may have suffered a knee injury during the game.
George mentioned that team meetings are common and necessary in professional basketball. He stated that these conversations aim to improve team performance and foster a positive environment.
Despite the challenges, Embiid remains optimistic about the season. He believes that the team can still compete for a championship but acknowledged the need for unity and improvement. “We have to go out and actually do it,” he said.
