Joey Logano Wins NASCAR Cup Series in Texas

Joey Logano Wins NASCAR Cup Series in Texas

May 6, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Logano victorious at‌ Texas Motor Speedway After ⁤Late-Race Chaos

FORT ‌WORTH, Texas (AP) — Joey Logano ⁣navigated a ⁣chaotic final few laps at Texas‍ Motor⁣ Speedway on Sunday to win the Würth 400‌ presented by LIQUI MOLY, securing his first NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season.

just⁤ a week after a ‌rear spoiler disqualification‌ at Talladega, Logano piloted his No. ⁣22 Ford‍ to⁣ a narrow 0.346-second victory over Ross Chastain in overtime. The win marks Logano’s second⁣ at⁤ the 1.5-mile ‍Texas track ⁣and the 37th of his career.

Logano’s triumph came after‍ a ⁣strong⁤ challenge from Michael McDowell, who led following a restart on lap 245. McDowell maintained ‍his lead through two ⁣subsequent cautions and restarts.

With less than four laps‌ remaining in⁢ regulation, Logano made his ‌move, diving ⁤low to overtake McDowell’s No. 71 Chevrolet. A lap later,Logano’s Team Penske teammate,Ryan Blaney, also passed McDowell for second.

McDowell⁤ then spun after losing control in the turbulent air‍ behind Blaney, crashing⁣ into the ⁢turn 2 wall and finishing ⁢26th.

“I’m sorry, boys, I tried,”

Michael⁤ McDowell ⁣reportedly told‌ his team.

In the ensuing overtime restart,⁣ Logano pulled away, holding off Blaney initially before Chastain surged into second place. Logano‌ then cruised to the win, marking the second consecutive victory⁢ for Team Penske after Austin Cindric’s win at Talladega.

“The ‌sport changes so fast,”

logano said ⁣after the race. “It’s amazing how you can get on these Russian mountains and be proud of the team. I finally got AAA Insurance to enter Victory Lane. They have been my‌ partners since⁢ I arrived⁢ at Penske, that ‍is, 13 or 14‍ years. I had not won with them, so it was fantastic⁣ to‍ get it here.”

Logano, who started 27th,steadily advanced through the field, capitalizing on other drivers’ mistakes.

“slowly, methodically, ⁣one pair simultaneously occurring,”

Logano said of his approach.”We had a very intricate situation when entering ⁢the pits. The pits team took over and managed to win a couple of positions here and there.”

He added, “The‌ car was⁤ fast.I knew yesterday. We simply made a bad classification. We simply had ⁤to‌ strive and we continued doing it and finally ⁤we got a ⁢victory. It is a pleasure to get it. ⁢Really⁢ great.”

Chastain, who started 31st, also made‌ a late charge.

“Caray, ‍what a‌ hard day!”

Chastain⁣ exclaimed. ⁢”Yesterday I had no confidence ⁣in the car. They ‌already saw it. The speed of‍ Trackhouse cars on Saturdays is terrible. The three pilots have no confidence.”

Blaney finished third, followed by Kyle Larson, who led⁢ a race-high 90 ‌laps but lost the lead to McDowell on a ‍restart with 26 laps remaining.

“You don’t⁣ want to lose the leadership in a mile and a⁤ half,”

larson said. “It’s hard to recover it. Yes,Michael simply did a ‌good job by calculating ⁤him.”

Erik‍ Jones finished fifth, his first top-five since last⁢ fall at⁢ Talladega. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Austin Dillon, John Hunter Nemechek, Christopher Bell,‍ and‌ Daniel Suárez rounded out the top 10.

Other Notable Moments

Denny Hamlin’s strong run ended on‌ lap 75 due to engine ‍failure. Flames erupted from⁣ under ‍the No. 11 ‍toyota before Hamlin brought it to‌ a ‌stop.

“He was ⁤exploding for approximately one lap before he really‌ detonated,”

Hamlin said.‍ “I tried to keep it off to‍ avoid exploding completely. That was why they could diagnose exactly what happened to him. It is‌ difficult to say exactly what it is, but they will review it and we will know⁣ in ‌a few weeks.”

Josh ‌Berry, who won at Las Vegas earlier this ‍year, crashed on lap 125 after contact with the wall in ‌Turn 4.

“I ⁣barely started to ⁢get closer to lagged ⁢traffic,”

Berry said. “You have no choice but to go for the opposite lane. Your car‍ will never turn if ‌you follow ‍them. I went to ’62’ (Jesse Love) on the outside and⁢ felt quite well. ⁢Then I reached the ’51’ (Cody Ware) and I was working on the ’51’, I hit that pump and lost control.”

the race featured 12 cautions for 73‍ laps. Austin Cindric led 60 laps before being involved in a four-car accident on lap 247. Pole-sitter Carson Hocevar led the first 22 ‍laps but fell‌ back after a late-race incident.

William Byron finished 13th and maintains the series points lead, 13 points ahead of Larson.
