Joey Logano Embraces Baldness, Cites Alopecia as Reason for Dramatic Hair Change
DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Joey Logano arrived at Daytona International Speedway this week sporting a strikingly different look: a completely shaved head. The NASCAR driver revealed Wednesday that the decision wasn’t a stylistic choice, but a practical response to a recurring battle with alopecia, an autoimmune condition that causes random patches of hair loss.
“I have alopecia and I randomly get these spots where the hair won’t grow,” Logano explained during media day. “I had another flare-up and just said, shoot, let’s shave it off. I’d thought about it, then I had another flare-up and said, this is the easiest thing to do.”
Logano recounted giving his son the clippers and letting him take care of the task. The new look initially prompted concern from fans, who reached out to inquire about his well-being. “I started getting a lot of messages from people asking if I was OK,” he laughed.
While Logano is adjusting to life without hair, he’s not alone in considering a significant change to his appearance. Chase Briscoe, also a NASCAR driver, hinted at a similar move, acknowledging the attention Logano’s transformation has received. “I might do it during the offseason. I might show up one week this summer with it all cut off, but it’s going to happen at some point, I can assure you,” Briscoe said.
Briscoe’s comments come after he debuted a shaved head himself in January, sparking comparisons to Logano and a flurry of reactions on social media. Fans playfully suggested Briscoe was “copying” Logano, while others joked about the aerodynamic advantages of a smooth head during qualifying for the Daytona 500.
Logano’s decision follows a tradition of drivers making notable physical changes before the start of the NASCAR season. Geoff Bodine famously sported a beard and a diamond ear stud in years past, while Kurt Busch underwent surgery two decades ago to pin his ears back.
Despite the unexpected change, Logano appears to be taking the situation in stride. He continues to maintain a small, fresh beard, at his wife’s insistence. “My wife said I still need to do that, and I said, ‘whatever you want,’” he shared.
The 2026 Daytona 500 is scheduled for Sunday, February 15th, with a start time of 2:30 pm ET and will be broadcast on Fox. The National Weather Service is forecasting a 60% chance of showers on Sunday, with a high near 77 degrees.
