Joey Pelupessy recently had the chance to represent the Indonesian national team during the FIFA Matchday break, marking a significant moment in his career.
Pelupessy played for the Indonesian national team in the third round of the World Cup Qualification 2026 in the Asia zone.
The midfielder debuted for the Indonesian national team in a match against Bahrain on Tuesday,March 25.
His performance was well-received.
Alongside teammate Thom Haye, Pelupessy played a key role in the midfield.
Pelupessy described his experience with the Indonesian national team as positive.
He expressed a connection with the team staff, who understood his Indonesian heritage. He noted the trip was his first to the country.
Pelupessy told NOS, It clearly appeared more in recent weeks.
He added that he frequently discussed his heritage with staff, physiotherapists, and doctors.
Pelupessy, who plays for Lommel SK, acknowledged his limited knowledge of his ancestral homeland.
He noted that this trip was the farthest he had ever traveled by plane.
Pelupessy aims to learn more about Maluku through this opportunity.
They know a lot about where my grandfather and grandmother came from,
he explained. Where they were born: Maluku. Ouw Village on Saparua Island.
