The Polari Prize, celebrating LGBTQ+ literature, is embroiled in controversy following the inclusion of author John Boyne on its longlist. The decision has sparked widespread criticism from within the LGBTQ+ community, leading to withdrawals from judges and writers, and a petition garnering over 800 signatures demanding his removal. The dispute centers on Boyne’s publicly stated views on trans rights, which many consider to be transphobic.
The backlash began after Boyne publicly voiced support for JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, and described himself as a “fellow Terf” (Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminist). This prompted a strong reaction from LGBTQ+ writers and activists who view such positions as harmful and exclusionary.
A statement signed by over 821 individuals condemns the Polari Prize’s decision, stating that Boyne’s “public statements on trans rights and identity are incompatible with the LGBTQ+ community’s most basic standards of inclusion.” The statement argues that including Boyne, notably in a year marked by rising anti-trans sentiment and systemic exclusion, is “inexcusable.”
Prize Organizers Respond to Mounting Pressure
Initially, the Polari Prize defended its decision, acknowledging the diversity of opinion within the LGBTQ+ community. In a statement on August 7th, the prize organizers said, “It is indeed inevitable…that even within our community, we can at times hold radically different positions on substantive issues.”
However, facing continued pressure and withdrawals from those associated with the prize, organizers issued a further apology on Monday. They acknowledged the “hurt and anger caused” and stated they “accept and respect the decisions of those writers and judges who have chosen to withdraw.” The prize is committed to proceeding this year but will undertake a “full review of the prize processes” and consult with community representatives before next year’s awards.
Calls for Boyne’s Removal and a More Inclusive Future
The petition demanding Boyne’s removal was organized by writers Niamh Ní Mhaoileoin and Emma van Straaten. They emphasize the importance of a literary prize that genuinely celebrates and supports queer and trans stories. “We want there to be a literary prize that recognises the vital importance of queer and trans stories,” their statement reads. “That’s why we’re calling on the Polari prize to formally remove Mr Boyne from the longlist, to restore the integrity of this prize as a safe, inclusive and celebratory space for the LGBTQ+ community.”
Signatories to the petition include prominent writers such as Nussaibah Younis, Poorna Bell, Daisy Buchanan, K Patrick, and Lex Croucher.
The Polari Prize, founded in 2011 by journalist paul Burston, published its longlists on August 1st. Shortlists are expected in late September, with winners announced on November 27th. The current situation casts a shadow over the awards and raises crucial questions about the responsibility of literary prizes to uphold inclusivity and challenge harmful ideologies within the community they represent.
