From Comedy icon to Canadian Patriot
John Candy rose to prominence with comedic roles in films such as Uncle Buck (1989), Spaceballs (1987), and Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987). He tragically passed away on March 4, 1994, at the age of 43, according to Rolling Stone.
Despite his success in the United States, Candy remained deeply connected to his Canadian identity.
A Local Legend
The story of Candy’s visit to Campbell River isn’t widely known, but it remains a cherished memory for many locals.Bob Kronbauer, a B.C. history expert known as BC Bob, confirms the tale’s enduring presence in the community.
“It was legendary around town that he came,” Kronbauer said. “He was welcomed by the community and hung out with people and had a great time. The stories of him being in Campbell River are what live on today.”
John Candy: I Like Me Documentary
A new documentary, John Candy: I Like Me, directed by Colin Hanks and produced by Ryan Reynolds, explores Candy’s life and career. The film features interviews with friends and family, offering insights into the man behind the laughter.
Kronbauer emphasizes Candy’s unwavering Canadian pride. “John Candy went to the States and became an American comedian, … but never dropped his Canadianness,” he added. “Nods and stories like these are critically important to keep telling. … I am happy he had this connection to British Columbia that we can keep telling.”
