John Cena confirmed during an appearance on NBC’s TODAY show that the inaugural John Cena Classic will take place in December 2026, putting a specific month on an event he previously placed only in the back end of 2026.
Cena first introduced the tournament at WWE’s Backlash Premium Live Event in May, describing a concept that pits NXT talent against main roster wrestlers. Speaking to NBC, Cena detailed the philosophy driving the live event, emphasizing the core values of his career.
Now this year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic. We’re gonna do an event based off all the memory, all the nostalgia, and the IP and the core values of the character, which is me. Hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds, and giving the vote to the people.

Audience-Vote Championship Format
Under this format, a competitor can lose a tournament match and still emerge as the winner based on the final fan vote.
Cena acknowledged the experimental nature of the tournament during his morning television appearance, stating that he does not yet know if the format will succeed. He has previously voiced similar doubts, telling WrestleRant in September that the Classic might fail and that acknowledging that risk was the point of the project.
Targeted December Date Overlaps with Wrestlepalooza Perth
While Cena confirmed the December 2026 window, he did not provide an exact date or venue, and WWE has not officially announced either detail. False Finish reported on August 21 that the company was targeting December 12, a date later corroborated by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

That targeted date creates an overlap with WWE’s previously announced schedule. WWE has scheduled Wrestlepalooza: Perth at RAC Arena in Western Australia for December 12, flanked by SmackDown on December 11 and Raw on December 14 at the same building. WWE has not yet clarified how the John Cena Classic fits alongside the Australian tour events.
