John Cena Says He Won’t Choose Opponent for WWE Retirement Match – John Cena opened up about his upcoming retirement from WWE during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on August 13, where he promoted season two of Peacemaker on HBO Max. The 16-time World Champion discussed how his final match will be booked, stressing that he will not personally choose his opponent.

When asked if he would have a say in selecting who he faces in his last match, Cena replied, “No, no. I’ve never operated like that. I’ve just always kind of been reliable, showing up, and doing whatever I’m asked. And I really want this tour to be, not only special — it’ll always be special for me because you guys [the fans] are out there — I want it to be special for the business. My goal has always been to leave WWE better than I found it. So whoever they deem appropriate to get that energy, man, I’m cool with that.”

Cena also explained why now is the right time to step away, noting his desire to create opportunities for younger talent. “I also remember when I was a young kid back in 2002 thinking I’d never get a chance. And then when I did, I came up with like a young, hungry class. And I think if I hang around any longer than now, I’m just taking time away from those young guys who can be the next chance to make an impact. It’s time, man. It’s time.”

Cena’s farewell tour, titled “The Last Time Is Now,” will conclude in December. His next major appearance will be a featured match against Logan Paul at WWE Clash in Paris on August 31.
