Actor John Stamos delivered an emotional speech focusing on fatherhood while accepting an honor at The Creative Coalition’s 12th Annual TV Humanitarian Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday, according to reports by Variety. Stamos grew visibly tearful as he discussed how raising his eight-year-old son, Billy, whom he shares with wife Caitlin McHugh, has fundamentally transformed his perspective on decades of advocacy work with the child abuse treatment and prevention organization Childhelp.
Fatherhood Reshapes Decades of Child Advocacy
Stamos has maintained a nearly 40-year association with Childhelp, but the personal significance of that mission shifted dramatically after he welcomed his son eight years ago. Speaking at the ceremony, the actor explained that parenting forces an immediate recognition of what vulnerable children require from adults.
Becoming a father has changed the way that I see children,
Stamos said. You look at your own kid and you realize how much they depend on us to make them feel safe and loved and protected, and then you realize there are so many children that don’t have that. Once you really let that in, it’s hard to look away.
Comedian and close friend Jeffrey Ross presented the humanitarian award to Stamos during the event. Isabelle Farina of Variety corroborated that the actor teared up during the address while discussing the intersection of his family life and his long-running advocacy efforts.
A New Childrens Book Project Inspired by Family Lore
Beyond his charity work, Stamos detailed an upcoming children’s book project that he is co-creating with his son, Billy, slated for publication on April 20, 2027, according to Variety. The book addresses the processing of grief through family folklore involving hummingbirds, rooted in memories of Stamos’s late father.
We have this folklore in our family, when my father passed away, there was a hummingbird in my dad’s garden, [Billy] said ‘There’s your dad,’
Stamos told Variety. I’m like ‘That’s a hummingbird.’ He said, ‘No, that’s your dad coming back to make sure we’re taking care of his garden.’ And so it’s been stuck in our family.
Stamos noted that Billy has approached the publishing project with seriousness. The father-son duo plans to conduct public readings of the book at children’s hospitals and schools once it releases, with the goal of supporting children who have lost grandparents.
