Event Details:
- What: 82nd Annual Boston Common Tree Lighting
- When: Thursday, December 5, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
- Where: Boston Common, near Visitor’s Information Center, 139 Tremont Street
- Hosts: Mayor Michelle Wu, Boston Parks and Recreation Department, The Province of Nova Scotia
Background:
- This celebration honors a 53-year tradition of Nova Scotia gifting a tree to Boston. This began as a thank you for Boston’s support during the Halifax Harbor explosion on December 6, 1917.
Mayor’s Statement:
Mayor Michelle Wu emphasized the importance of this tradition, stating that it celebrates the strong bond between Boston and Nova Scotia. She expressed gratitude for the beautiful tree donated by Liz and Hugh Ryan from Nova Scotia.
Tree Specifications:
- The Christmas tree is a 48-year-old, 45-foot-tall white spruce.
- It will be adorned with approximately 5,000 lights.
Lighting Ceremony:
- The lights on the tree and over 50,000 lights in Boston Common and Public Garden will light up at 8:00 p.m., joined onstage by Santa Claus and Rudolph.
- The event culminates with fireworks by Pyrotecnico.
Commonwealth Avenue Mall:
Immediately after the Boston Common event, lights on Commonwealth Avenue Mall will be turned on, extending to Kenmore Square.
