Join the Fight: 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Towards Women

November 16, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

The campaign begins on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends on December 10, Human Rights Day. It urges governments, activists, and individuals to unite for change.

In 2008, the UN Secretary-General launched the UNITE by 2030 campaign to support this initiative. The campaign runs alongside the 16 Days of Activism, focusing on a specific theme each year. This year’s theme is “UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls.” It aims for long-term solutions to address the root causes of violence.

Why It Matters

Nearly one in three women and girls worldwide will face physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. In 2023, more than 51,100 women experienced femicide, with over half killed by intimate partners or family members. UN Women emphasizes that femicides show a failure in the systems that should protect women and girls.

Public figures, including politicians and journalists, also face violent threats. These incidents often lead to serious harm or death.

Turning Pain into Advocacy

Ms. Huseynova endured three years of torture in a Russian prison. She now fights for justice and recovery for victims of violence. “We will use every means to make their pain visible,” she states, highlighting her commitment to visibility and advocacy.

What Can We Do?

Everyone can contribute to ending violence. Support local organizations and advocate for stronger laws. Iren Cari, an Argentinian activist, urges support for women’s political participation.

UN Women calls for governments to create laws that hold abusers accountable, specifically through National Action Plans. Funding women’s rights organizations is essential for helping survivors recover.

The 16 Days of Activism remind us that every action counts in the fight against gender-based violence.
