Join the Fight: Synergia Animal’s Mission to Stop Avian Flu Through Safe Breeding Practices
Avian Flu Outbreak: A Silent Global Crisis
Bangkok, Thailand – September 27, 2024: The outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza since October 2021 represents one of the worst threats in history. More than 280 million birds have died. Wildlife and endangered mammals are also victims of this deadly disease.
The Main Cause of the Crisis: Industrial Farming
The main cause of this crisis is the animal husbandry system on large industrial farms. This is often crowded and unhygienic, creating an environment conducive to the spread of various diseases, including “bird flu”.
A Silent Global Crisis
“Avian flu” is a silent global crisis that is being overlooked. H5N1 avian influenza was first discovered in 1996 on a goose farm in China. Since then, the virus has spread around the world and has become increasingly dangerous.
This deadly virus isn’t just killing millions of birds, affecting at least 485 bird species worldwide, including 40% of Dalmatian pelicans in southeastern Europe. But it also affects 48 other mammal species, including endangered sea lions and South American elephants.
Threat to Humans
Ms. Chisakarn Areepiphat, Communications Manager from Synergia Animal, said: “Experts agree that global attention to this crisis is urgent. Although currently bird flu is not easily transmitted from person to person, the virus has a high ability to mutate and could become a serious threat to humans.”
Industrial Farms: Breeding Grounds for Disease
Industrial farms are breeding grounds for disease. Another avian influenza outbreak occurred in 2024 and spread to hundreds of dairy farms in the United States. Industrial agriculture is crowded and unsanitary, causing various germs, such as the H5N1 avian flu strain, to spread rapidly.
International Efforts to Combat H5N1 Avian Influenza
Many countries are facing the critical effects of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, with Asian countries such as Cambodia, China, and Vietnam seeing an increase in the number of avian influenza infections in both poultry and people.
Stop the Threat of Industrial Farming
Synergia Animal calls on society to work together to reduce dependence on factory farming, which is an important cause of the outbreak of various epidemics, and improve animal welfare with more stringent biosecurity measures.
By moving to a sustainable food system, such as supporting organic farming and eating more healthy, planet-friendly vegetables, we can protect public health and biodiversity.
