Join the NEDO Quantum Computing Challenge: Solve Societal Issues for 200 Million Yen!
Brainiacs from various fields can join a contest to apply quantum computing to key issues in society. The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) announced this competition on October 30. NEDO aims to attract talented individuals and experts with approximately 200 million yen ($1.3 million) in prize money for outstanding ideas.
The contest will focus on specific issues facing Japanese society, including challenges related to natural disasters and an aging population. Participants will work individually or in groups to propose innovative solutions using quantum computing.
Three societal issues will be chosen based on public suggestions. The participant or group with the best solution for each issue will win at least 20 million yen.
NEDO’s contest is open to everyone, including those without experience in quantum computing, such as corporate researchers and International Mathematical Olympiad winners. Individuals from other fields can take free courses to learn about quantum computing beforehand.
NEDO hopes to encourage creative solutions from various experts and untapped talents. An open call for suggestions on specific issues is also underway.
The recruitment period for participants without expertise in quantum computing will last until noon on December 13. Applications can be made by individuals or groups. The contest will start in March 2025, with final judging in August 2026.
