Jokowi’s High School Diploma Challenged in Court
Lawsuit Filed Against President Jokowi Over High School Diploma
SOLO, Indonesia – A lawsuit challenging the authenticity of President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) high school diploma has been filed in the Solo District Court. Muhammad Taufiq, a lawyer based in Solo, initiated the legal action, naming Jokowi as the primary defendant.
The suit, registered on April 14, 2025, also lists the Solo City General Elections Commission (KPU), SMAN 6 Solo (a local high school), and Gadjah Mada University (UGM) as defendants. The case number is 99/PDT.G/2025/PN SKT, according to Bambang Ariyanto, a Public Relations Officer for the Solo District Court.
Plaintiff’s Allegations
Taufiq claims the Solo City KPU failed to properly verify Jokowi’s diploma, relying solely on a certified photocopy. He further alleges that SMAN 6 Solo was not established until 1986,suggesting that graduates before that year would have attended a different school,SMPP (School for the Construction of Preparation).
Taufiq questioned UGM’s role, stating that a diploma serves as proof of academic completion and should not be retained or archived by the institution. He implied discrepancies exist within the presented high school diploma data, raising doubts about its validity.
“From the team we found a fact, Mr. Jokowi was a high school diploma, some said from the UGM page from SMAN 6 (Solo), it certainly did not,” Taufiq told reporters at the Solo District Court. “We found a friend of Pak Jokowi’s diploma not SMAN 6, at that time but SMPP, namely (School) for the construction of preparation.”
Court Proceedings
The Solo District Court has acknowledged the lawsuit and appointed a panel of judges to oversee the proceedings. Putu Gede Hariadi will serve as the presiding judge, with Sutikna and Wahyuni Prasetyaningsih as member judges.
jokowi’s Response
Prior to the filing, Jokowi indicated he was considering legal action in response to accusations regarding his diploma. He stated that his legal team was reviewing the matter, citing confirmations from the Rector of UGM and the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry regarding his alumni status.
Jokowi has asserted his status as a UGM alumnus, emphasizing that the university has repeatedly confirmed the authenticity of his diploma. He challenged those making accusations to provide evidence.
“It has been conveyed by the Chancellor, the Dean, not only once has been opened like that,” Jokowi said. “If it is still a matter of letter, until the number of numbers, if that’s already.”
