Jon Favreau has publicly acknowledged that he was mistaken in initially opposing the decision to kill off Tony Stark in Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame.” The filmmaker, who played a pivotal role in launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe with 2008’s “Iron Man,” admitted his change of heart during a recent appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” to promote his upcoming “Star Wars” film “The Mandalorian and Grogu.”

Favreau revealed that he had contacted directors Anthony and Joe Russo to express his reservations about the character’s fate, concerned that audiences — particularly those who had grown up with Iron Man — might not respond positively to such a major loss. “I said, ‘I don’t know if people are gonna like … I don’t know, it’s really going to impact people because they were kids that grew up with that character,’” Favreau recalled during the interview.

However, after seeing the final product, Favreau stated he was wrong in his assessment. He praised the Russo brothers for handling the emotional weight of the scene with care, highlighting the performances of Robert Downey Jr. And Gwyneth Paltrow as key to its success. “But I have to tell you, it was handled so well by them. And Gwyneth [Paltrow] and Robert did such a wonderful job acting, and I think it added a poignancy to it. I think they did a wonderful job. I was wrong,” Favreau said.

The filmmaker also shared that he became emotional while watching the film, admitting he was choked up during Stark’s sacrificial moment. “Even though it’s a movie, those people, those characters, have been part of my life for so long,” he told Kimmel, adding that the host jokingly remarked they had “killed off Favreau’s baby.”

Despite his initial hesitation, Favreau expressed enthusiasm for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically noting his excitement to see Robert Downey Jr. Return in a new role as Doctor Doom in the upcoming film “Avengers: Doomsday.” He also reflected on his own contribution to the franchise, calling his decision to portray Happy Hogan in the first “Iron Man” film “the smartest thing I ever did,” as it has allowed him to remain involved throughout the series’ evolution.

Favreau’s candid reflection underscores the lasting impact of Tony Stark’s arc and the emotional resonance of his conclusion in “Avengers: Endgame,” a moment that continues to be discussed years after the film’s release.
