Jon Jones, MMA Great, Announces Retirement; ⁤Aspinall Elevated

Updated June 21, ‍2025

Jon Jones, 37, considered ⁢by‍ many to be the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, has retired from competition, according to UFC CEO‍ Dana⁣ White. The announcement came Friday, derailing plans for a heavyweight title unification bout between Jones and interim champion‍ tom Aspinall. Aspinall is now the undisputed champion, and⁢ the UFC plans to work with him next week to schedule his first title defense.

White announced the news during a news conference in ⁣Azerbaijan, where UFC Fight Night took place. “Jon Jones called us last night and ⁤retired,” White said.”Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is ⁤the heavyweight champion of the UFC.”

Jones confirmed ⁢his retirement in a social⁢ media post⁣ Saturday. He expressed gratitude for his journey and said, “This decision comes⁣ after a lot of reflection, ⁤and I ⁣want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years.” He added, “MMA will always be a part of ⁣who I⁤ am, and I’m excited‍ to see how I can continue to contribute to the sport and inspire others in new ways.” The retirement⁣ marks a significant shift in the UFC heavyweight landscape, impacting future matchups and title defenses.

Jones, boasting a 28-1 ⁣record, captured the vacant heavyweight championship in 2023 against Ciryl Gane after moving up from the light heavyweight division. He defended the title onc during his 27-month reign with a TKO ‍victory over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November. A potential fight between Jones and Aspinall had been highly anticipated, but Jones had⁣ downplayed the matchup, leading⁢ to accusations that he was avoiding Aspinall. An online⁣ petition to strip Jones of his title garnered nearly 200,000 signatures.

White expressed sympathy for Aspinall, stating, “I obviously feel bad for Tom that he⁢ lost all that time and money, but we’ll make it up to him. Tom Aspinall is a good guy. ⁣He’s been unbelievable through this whole process that we’ve ⁣gone through.” White added, “Aspinall has been great. He’s going‍ to be ⁢a great heavyweight champion for us, and I’m excited to work with him.”

Throughout his career, the Albuquerque, New Mexico-based Jones⁤ has faced legal issues. In 2015, he was arrested for a felony hit-and-run
