Hundreds gathered at St Patrick’s Church in Lough Gur, Co Limerick, to pay tribute to the late Jon Kenny. For sixty years, he brought laughter to many. Locals noted the significance of holding his mass at St Patrick’s, close to his family home, where many would hope to see him and share in his joy.
His wife, Margy, expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support since his passing. She shared how much people loved Jon and how he reciprocated that love. Margy reflected on his special ability to connect with others, fondly recalling how he would share stories about the wonderful people he met after shows.
His daughter, Laya, honored her father by reading one of his poems. Close friend John Creedon delivered an emotional eulogy, celebrating Jon as a gifted poet, musician, and performer, but emphasizing his compassion and kindness.
Creedon remarked, “To say he was a truly remarkable man would be a massive understatement.” He highlighted Jon’s ability to make children laugh, recounting how they adored him, even as he playfully urged them to go to bed.
Many other friends, including traditional musicians and fellow performers, also paid their respects. Jon’s beloved dog sat by the front pew, close to his casket. Musicians played some of his favorite tunes during the mass.
Father Edward Cleary, who led the mass, praised Jon for his roles as a comic, actor, and musician, but noted that his greatest role was as a loving husband and father. He celebrated Jon’s generosity and dedication to his family and community.
Jon Kenny passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was surrounded by family at the time of his death. The community remembered him for his warmth, humor, and the joy he brought into their lives. Jon was laid to rest next to St Patrick’s Church.
His legacy includes various performances, from popular shows like Father Ted to films like Angela’s Ashes. He also engaged in poetry and storytelling, always bringing happiness to those around him. Jon once humorously claimed his career was based on “bluffing,” but his true talent shone through in every performance.
