Jon M. Chu Urges ‘Wicked’ Audiences to Request Higher Sound Levels for the Full Experience
Wicked Movie Director’s Sound Request
The director of Wicked, Jon M. Chu, has made a special request for audiences. He urges viewers to ask theaters to raise the sound volume during screenings of the film.
Chu mentioned on social media that many theaters play the movie at a sound level of about 6.4. He believes it should be increased to 7 for the best experience. He stated, “Tell your movie theater to turn it up to a 7… If you want it the way it was intended, 7 is the way.”
The film stars Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Dana Fox, one of the film’s co-writers, agreed with Chu’s suggestion. She shared that her screening benefited from a slight boost in volume.
Audiovisual company Dolby responded positively, assuring audiences they would ensure a great sound experience.
Some viewers were surprised by Chu’s request. They were unaware that they could request a volume adjustment during a screening. Others noted that they wished the sound had been louder during their Wicked showings.
John Marquis, the film’s sound designer, discussed the recording process. He emphasized the challenge of maintaining consistency in sound levels, especially during musical numbers.
As for the film’s performance, Wicked is set for a strong opening weekend, with projections for a domestic debut of $117 million. It competes against Gladiator II, which is also performing well.
