Jonah Hill described his upcoming comedy, Cut Off, as “pure stupidity” while appearing at SmartLess Live on Saturday, April 26, 2026. The film, slated for theatrical release on July 17, 2026, stars Hill and Kristen Wiig as wealthy siblings who are financially cut off by their parents.
Hill, who also co-wrote the script with Ezra Woods and is directing the film, elaborated on the premise, stating the movie is about “two dumb ass heirs, rich kids in their mid-40s who get cut off by their rich parents.” He likened the comedic tone to a blend of Step Brothers, Clueless and Trading Places. Bette Midler and Nathan Lane Join the Cast
Bette Midler and Nathan Lane will portray the parents who sever ties with their children. Midler’s casting was confirmed by Deadline in September 2025. The film is shooting in California and received a $10 million tax credit, as previously reported.
Hill expressed enthusiasm about working with his co-stars, describing Kristen Wiig as “an American treasure.” He also noted his recent collaborations with high-profile actors, including Keanu Reeves and Cameron Diaz in Outcome, and now Midler and Lane. He credited Warner Bros. Pictures’ Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy with supporting the return of comedy to theaters.
Hill’s Shift Towards Comedy
Hill’s comments suggest a deliberate move towards lighter fare following his work on Outcome, an Apple TV+ original film. He indicated a desire to focus on “the dumbest shit you’ve ever seen” for his upcoming projects, encouraging audiences to “leave your brains at home.”
Midler, a multi-hyphenate performer with a career spanning six decades, is known for her roles in films such as The Rose, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Beaches, For the Boys, and The First Wives Club. She recently appeared in the Hocus Pocus sequel and Sitting in Bars with Cake. Lane is a celebrated stage and screen actor known for his work in The Producers and Modern Family.
Cut Off is being produced by Strong Baby’s Matt Dines and Ali Goodwin alongside Hill. Jesse Ehrman and Zach Hamby are overseeing the project for Warner Bros. Pictures.
