Jon jones vs. Tom Aspinall: Will the Heavyweight Title Fight Ever Happen?
Tom Aspinall’s November 2023 victory over Sergei Pavlovich at UFC 295, where he claimed the interim heavyweight title, seemingly paved the way for a title unification clash with Jon Jones. Though, nearly a year later, the highly anticipated Jon jones vs. Tom Aspinall fight remains unbooked, leaving fans questioning if it will ever materialize.
Jones’ initial reluctance to engage was understandable, given his recovery from a torn pectoral muscle, the same injury that led to the creation of the interim title in the first place. Aspinall stepped in for Jones at UFC 295, defeating Pavlovich on short notice and later defending his interim belt against Curtis Blaydes in July 2024. Jones then returned to defeat Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in November, further fueling speculation about a unification bout.
Despite the logical progression, the fight’s realization remains uncertain. UFC President dana White has repeatedly assured the MMA community that the Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall fight is on, even stating after UFC 316 that Jones had accepted the deal. However, Jones’ social media activity paints a different picture.
And remember, you can’t strip a guy like me at this point I give the belt up freely. Veni, vidi, vici. 😘
