Steelers Interested in Dolphins’ Jonnu Smith Amid Contract Demands
The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly engaged in trade discussions with the Miami Dolphins for tight end Jonnu Smith. The potential trade surfaces as Smith seeks a contract adjustment, despite expressing his desire to stay in Miami.
Smith is looking for a raise from his scheduled $4.8 million salary for the upcoming season. Last year, he set Dolphins’ single-season tight end records with 88 receptions, 884 yards, and eight touchdowns. Only Brock Bowers, Trey McBride, and George Kittle surpassed his receiving yards among tight ends.
Despite the trade talks, Smith’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told the Miami Herald that his client would “definitely like to stay in Miami.” Rosenhaus emphasized smith’s ties to the city, his record-breaking season, and his status as the team’s only Pro Bowl player last year.
“Here’s what I will say on behalf of my client: Jonnu would definitely like to stay in Miami. That’s his first choice,” Rosenhaus told the Miami Herald.
Smith previously worked with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith during their time with the Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons. Pittsburgh’s interest in Smith comes as they look to bolster their offense.
Separately, the Steelers are also planning to host free-agent wide receiver Gabe Davis, recently released by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Davis had 20 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games last season before a torn meniscus ended his season.
What’s next
The Dolphins and Steelers will likely continue discussions regarding a potential Jonnu Smith trade. The Steelers will also evaluate Gabe Davis during his visit, potentially adding another weapon to their offense.
