Jonny Evans has transitioned into a coaching role at Manchester United, joining the staff led by Michael Carrick. The former defender has described the shift from playing to coaching as a natural
progression as he integrates into the club’s technical setup.
The move follows Evans’ retirement from professional football in May 2025. His playing career was marked by significant success, including the acquisition of multiple domestic titles and the UEFA Champions League.
Following his retirement, Evans returned to Manchester United in a new capacity. His initial responsibilities involved overseeing loan moves for the club’s young players before he transitioned into a full-time coaching position.
Now serving as an assistant coach, Evans has become a regular presence on the training ground. He has indicated that his long-standing relationship with Michael Carrick facilitated a smooth entry into the coaching staff.
It’s been really good. I’ve known Michael a long time, so coming in with him and the rest of the staff has been easy. The club feels like home, so day to day just feels natural.

Integration into Coaching Staff
Evans currently works alongside other experienced coaching figures, including Jonathan Woodgate and Steve Holland. This environment has allowed him to focus on the tactical and mental aspects of the game from a leadership perspective.
He has noted that the transition has required a change in his mental approach to football. Evans stated that he is learning every day
and has really enjoyed
the experience of his mind thinking differently
in a coaching capacity.
Adjusting Player Dynamics
One of the primary challenges Evans faced during the transition was the change in his relationship with current players. He admitted that the first few days of his new role felt a bit strange
due to the shift in hierarchy.
Evans specifically highlighted the change in his dynamic with Harry Maguire. He observed the rapid shift from being a teammate playing alongside Maguire to being in a position where he is now coaching him.
According to Evans, these dynamics eventually normalize. He explained that once the initial adjustment period is over, the relationship becomes natural, and conversations about the game continue, albeit from a different perspective.
A similar adjustment period occurred with other players he has known for many years, including Luke Shaw. Evans has known Shaw since the full-back first arrived at Manchester United as a teenager.
Evans estimated that it took approximately two weeks to fully adjust to these new professional boundaries. He noted that after that period, everything started to flow
.
