Jordan Montgomery: New Contract & 2023 World Series Champion

Rangers Re-Sign World Series Champion Jordan Montgomery

The Texas Rangers are bringing back left-handed pitcher Jordan Montgomery on a one-year, $1.25 million contract, according to multiple reports confirmed on Wednesday, .

Montgomery, 33, was a key contributor to the Rangers’ 2023 World Series championship run after being acquired mid-season from the St. Louis Cardinals. In 11 regular season starts for Texas, he posted a 2.79 ERA. He continued to perform in the postseason, going 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA across six appearances, including five starts and 31 innings pitched.

The reunion comes after a challenging period for Montgomery. He signed a two-year, $47.5 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks following the World Series win, but struggled in 2024, recording a 6.23 ERA in 25 appearances. He then missed the entire 2025 season due to an elbow injury requiring surgery.

The Rangers’ team physician, Dr. Keith Meister, performed Montgomery’s most recent elbow surgery. He previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018, performed by Dr. Christopher Ahmad while with the New York Yankees.

The Rangers are anticipating Montgomery will be a valuable addition to the pitching staff in the second half of the 2026 season, providing depth as he continues his rehabilitation. The team will need to make a roster move to create a spot for Montgomery, as their 40-man roster was full heading into spring training.

The Rangers’ starting rotation already includes Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom, Jack Leiter, Jacob Latz, and MacKenzie Gore, acquired in a trade with the Washington Nationals. They also have depth options in Kumar Rocker.

During his time with the Diamondbacks, Montgomery experienced a decline in performance and faced criticism after exercising a $22.5 million option for 2025, prior to his injury. He finished the 2024 season with 83 strikeouts in 117 innings, and was briefly moved to the bullpen after a nearly month-long absence due to a knee injury.

Despite the setbacks, the Rangers believe Montgomery can regain his form and contribute to their pitching success, bringing back a player who played a significant role in their championship victory.
