Tabasco, Mexico – The legal net is tightening around former Tabasco Public Security Secretary, Hernán Bermúdez Requena, as recent court proceedings have seen him denied a crucial precautionary measure and his amparo trial concluded without his full participation. Meanwhile, a separate legal avenue has granted him a temporary reprieve against potential human rights violations.
Legal Maneuvers and Missed Deadlines
A recent hearing on Tuesday saw a judge rule against granting Bermúdez Requena a precautionary measure. The former official failed to meet a critical requirement: depositing a 16,000 peso guarantee. This oversight, coupled with his lawyer’s failure to ratify any judicial impediments, led to the conclusion of his amparo trial. Amparo trials are a vital legal tool in Mexico, offering protection against acts that violate constitutional rights.
This advancement comes as Bermúdez Requena remains at large, having fled the country on January 26th. His flight followed Interpol’s issuance of a red notice, a global alert requesting law enforcement agencies in over 190 countries to locate and detain him. He is identified as a founder of the criminal association known as “La Barredora.”
A Glimmer of Protection Amidst the Storm
In a contrasting legal development, Manelic Delón Vázquez, head of the Eighth District Court in Tabasco, granted Bermúdez Requena a suspension of proceedings. this specific measure is designed to protect against potential deprivations of liberty, incommunication, torture, and arrest warrants. Such protections are typically granted when there is a credible concern that serious violations of fundamental rights could occur. It’s critically important to note that these suspensions are temporary, serving to halt possibly unlawful actions while the broader case is examined. The court has instructed its officials to locate Hernán Bermúdez and ensure he ratifies his demand for guarantees. Should he fail to do so, the legal proceedings will be considered as if he had not submitted them, and the precautionary measure will be rendered ineffective.
The Hunt for a Fugitive
The international search for Bermúdez Requena is actively underway, conducted in coordination with various security agencies. Federal authorities had previously initiated an inquiry into the former official, leading to the Interpol red notification.
Hernán Bermúdez Requena served as the State Public Security holder under former Governor Adam Augusto López Hernández. He continued in this role during the interim executive period of Carlos Merino Campos, serving until the conclusion of the previous government’s term. His tenure in public office now stands in stark contrast to his current status as a fugitive sought by international law enforcement.
