José Alvarado Wins Camilla, Puerto Rico Rises in Americanup
Alvarado Injury Mars Puerto Rico’s Heartbreaking Loss to argentina
Managua, Nicaragua - A promising run at the AmericanUp 2025 tournament ended in agonizing fashion for Puerto Rico on Thursday, as they fell to defending champions Argentina 82-77 in overtime. The defeat, played in front of a passionate crowd at the Alexis Arguello Sports Center, marks the fourth consecutive tournament where the national team has failed to reach the coveted final four.
The game’s defining moment arrived with just 2:11 left in overtime. With Argentina clinging to a narrow 76-74 lead, star guard José Alvarado, the New orleans Pelicans standout, suffered a painful lower back injury while battling for an offensive rebound. The arena fell silent as Alvarado lay on the court for several minutes, eventually being stretchered off to a wave of supportive applause from both Puerto Rican and Argentinian fans.
“They take José Alvarado, a lower back and neck contusion,” tweeted levi luna, capturing the somber mood.
Alvarado’s injury cast a pall over the already tense atmosphere. He had been instrumental in Puerto Rico’s effort, leading the team with 25 points. His absence was promptly felt.
Despite the setback, Puerto Rico showed remarkable resilience. Alfonso Plummer drained a clutch three-pointer with 56 seconds remaining, pulling them within one point at 78-77. However, Juan Fernández responded quickly for Argentina, and a missed shot by Clatell on the ensuing possession forced Plummer to commit an intentional foul. José Vildoza calmly sank both free throws with 8.7 seconds left, sealing Argentina’s victory.
Puerto Rico had earlier built a commanding 64-53 lead thanks to an Alvarado three-pointer with 8:11 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Argentina responded with a 29-13 run, exposing vulnerabilities in the Puerto Rican defense.
“At one point in the game,we could establish our defense. it was the main characteristic of us, our identity,” said Puerto Rico’s leader, Carlos González.”We defended very well, and that allowed us to take an advantage and score. Then, when we cannot execute offensively, we create mistakes, we turn the ball over, and they score on the other side.”
gonzález lamented the team’s inability to contain Argentina’s inside game down the stretch. “the curtain did too much right clean with great men. They arrived at the basket or took the advantage with offenses. We couldn’t stop that action. Basically, that was the game.”
The loss extends Puerto Rico’s medal drought at the continental level. Their last podium finish was a silver medal in Venezuela in 2013, and their last gold medal dates back to 1995. While the future remains uncertain, the immediate concern is for José Alvarado’s health and recovery. The team and its fans can only hope for a swift and complete return for their star player.
