SAN DIEGO – Jose Iglesias played the role of hero Sunday,driving in all three runs as the san Diego Padres edged the Kansas City Royals 3-2 at petco Park. The victory secured the Padres’ first series win since early June.
Before the game, the Padres activated All-Star center fielder Jackson Merrill from the injured list, optioning outfielder Brandon Lockridge to triple-A El Paso. manager Mike Shildt adjusted the lineup, placing Merrill in the second spot and moving Luis Arraez to cleanup.
Despite expectations, Randy Vasquez and Seth Lugo engaged in a pitcher’s duel. vasquez pitched five shutout innings, while Lugo retired 18 consecutive Padres after Fernando tatis Jr.’s leadoff single.
Salvador Perez broke the scoreless tie in the sixth, launching a two-run homer off Vasquez. However, Merrill ignited the Padres’ offense in the seventh with a leadoff double. After Lugo exited, Iglesias delivered a two-out, two-run single against Lucas Erceg, tying the game.
