Joseph Dillon: Remembering the Midwest Radio Broadcaster | RIP.ie Death Notice

March 7, 2026 Marcus Rodriguez Entertainment

The airwaves across County Mayo, and for a devoted listenership extending beyond, are noticeably quieter this week. Joseph Dillon, known affectionately as “Joe” to generations of Midwest Radio listeners, has died peacefully at the Mayo Roscommon Hospice in Castlebar, surrounded by his family. He was March 4th, 2026.

Dillon wasn’t simply a radio personality in the region; he was the sound of Mayo. For decades, he served as a consistent, comforting presence, announcing local events, delivering vital news, and providing companionship during daily routines. The impact of a local radio voice is often underestimated in the age of streaming and on-demand content, but Dillon’s connection with his audience was palpable, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes following news of his passing.

Details surrounding Dillon’s personal life were largely kept private, reflecting a quiet dignity that mirrored his on-air persona. He is predeceased by his wife, Bridie (O’Callaghan), his parents Pat and Annie, and siblings John, Chris, and Mary. He is survived by his son Declan (and Andrea), daughters Patricia (with Barry) and Sandra (with Darren), grandchildren Rebeka, Kyle, Joshua, and Alex, brothers Ollie and Gerry, and sister Vera, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

A wake was held at Killawalla Community Centre on Friday evening, March 6th, from 5:30pm until 7:30pm, providing an opportunity for the community to pay their respects. A Funeral Mass took place at Ballintubber Abbey on Saturday, March 7th, at 3pm, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. For those unable to attend in person, the service was live-streamed via www.churchtv.ie/ballintubber.

While details of Dillon’s early career remain largely unpublicized, his long association with Midwest Radio cemented his status as a local institution. He became synonymous with the station’s coverage of community events, from local festivals and sporting matches to important announcements and emergency broadcasts. He possessed a distinctive, reassuring voice that resonated with listeners of all ages.

The loss is particularly acute given the increasingly fragmented media landscape. In an era where national and international news often dominate the headlines, Dillon’s commitment to local reporting and community engagement served as a vital link, connecting people to the events and issues that directly impacted their lives. He understood the power of radio to foster a sense of belonging and shared identity.

Beyond his professional role, Dillon was remembered by those who knew him as a kind and unassuming man. He was a dedicated family man and a respected member of the local community. His passing leaves a void not only in the broadcasting world but also in the hearts of those who had the pleasure of knowing him personally.

The death of Joseph Dillon serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of local media and the enduring power of community radio. In a world increasingly dominated by global forces, the voices that connect us to our local roots are more valuable than ever. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through the memories of those who listened to his broadcasts and the countless lives he touched throughout his career at Midwest Radio.

He died on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026, according to a death notice published on RIP.ie.
