Joseph Duggar, a former star of the TLC reality series “19 Kids and Counting,” entered a plea of not guilty on March 31, 2026, in a Florida court. The 31-year-old was extradited from Arkansas to Florida, where he faces accusations of molesting a 9-year-old girl when he was older than 18. Following the hearing, Duggar posted a $600,000 bond and was released to return home, subject to a judge’s order barring contact with anyone younger than 18.

The legal proceedings mark a significant development in a case that has drawn renewed attention to the Duggar family, known for their ultra-conservative Christian lifestyle and long-running television presence. Duggar’s attorney, Albert Sauline, addressed the media following the hearing, emphasizing the need for due process given his client’s public profile.

Our No. 1 goal is to make sure he is treated fairly, especially because of his status as a reality TV celebrity.

Allegations and Florida Charges

Duggar was initially arrested on March 18, 2026, in his home state of Arkansas. The arrest followed an investigation by authorities in Panama City Beach, Florida, who interviewed a 14-year-old girl. The accuser alleged that Duggar molested her when she was 9 years old during a family vacation in 2020. At the time of the alleged incidents, Duggar was in his mid-20s.

Upon his arrest, Duggar was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior molesting a victim under 12 and lewd and lascivious behavior conducted by a person over 18. According to a statement from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office released on March 18, the allegations involve multiple incidents during the vacation period.

Investigators reported that Duggar repeatedly asked the victim to sit on his lap. As the vacation continued, he allegedly asked her to sit next to him on a couch, covered them with a blanket, manipulated the victim’s underwear, and grazed her genitals. The sheriff’s office stated that Duggar would also continue to rub his hands on her thighs. Authorities noted that the victim stated Duggar eventually apologized for his actions, after which the incidents stopped.

The victim’s father confronted Duggar about the incidents on March 17, 2026. Investigators learned that Duggar admitted to the father and to hometown detectives what he had done. If convicted on the Florida charges, Duggar could face a life sentence.

Extradition and Court Schedule

The hearing on March 31, 2026, took place hours after the onetime reality star was extradited from Tontitown, Arkansas, where he was initially taken into custody. Legal documents indicate that Duggar submitted a written plea of not guilty on March 29, 2026, waived arraignment on those charges, and demanded a jury trial. According to reports from KATV, Duggar is due back in court on April 20, 2026.

Kendra Duggar Arrested in Arkansas

Joseph Duggar’s wife, Kendra Duggar, was also arrested in connection with separate charges in Arkansas. Tontitown authorities took her into custody on March 20, 2026, two days after her husband was arrested on the charges out of Florida. The 27-year-old mother of four was charged with four misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of second-degree false imprisonment.

Local news station KNWA-TV reported that Tontitown police said this separate investigation was launched on the heels of the alleged incident in Florida. A source close to the family told People that Kendra Duggar’s arrest was the result of a home inspection where locks were found on the exterior of the doors. If convicted, she could face up to eight years behind bars.

The charges in Arkansas are apparently unrelated to the molestation charges that Joseph Duggar faces in Florida. Like his wife, he was also charged with the same alleged offenses in Arkansas. As of March 31, 2026, neither spouse had entered a plea on those specific Arkansas charges.

Family History and Reactions

The arrest has prompted reactions from within the extended family. Amy Duggar King, Joseph’s sister, said she was not surprised by the allegations. In an interview published by People on April 1, 2026, King suggested there was a deeper systemic issue at play within the family structure.

When they grow up around environments where the power is unchecked, and men are elevated and not held accountable, and silence is encouraged and rewarded, it creates the perfect conditions for abuse to happen and to continue.

The Duggar family rose to fame via “19 Kids and Counting,” a long-running TLC reality series about a fundamentalist Christian family who homeschooled their children and disavowed birth control and kissing before marriage. The series started out with “17 Kids” in the title, then went to 18 and finally 19. All 19 offspring have names starting with the letter J.

The family’s image of purity and religious devotion faced significant scrutiny in May 2015 when Josh Duggar, then 27 and the eldest of those “19 Kids,” was accused of molesting five younger girls when he was 15. Four of them were his sisters; the other was a babysitter. The show, which had been TLC’s top attraction with an average of more than 3 million viewers per episode, was canceled in July 2015 after airing on the network since 2008.

Josh Duggar was later found guilty in 2021 of two counts of possessing and receiving materials depicting the sexual abuse of children. He was sentenced in 2022 to 12½ years in federal prison. Authorities had searched his business in November 2019 and seized his desktop computer and other evidence. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that he used the dark web to download material depicting the sexual abuse of children to a laptop at his car dealership.

Following the recent arrests of Joseph and Kendra Duggar, a spokesperson for Joseph’s parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, addressed the situation. The spokesperson stated that the elder Duggars are focused on loving their family and helping Kendra and her children during this difficult time. They also noted that the couple is praying for the victim.

After the “19 Kids” cancellation, “Counting On,” a spin-off focusing on the children other than Josh Duggar, was launched. That show ended after his child pornography arrest. The current legal developments represent another significant chapter in the public scrutiny of the family known for their reality television presence.
