New York Knicks Fire Head Coach Tom Thibodeau after Playoff Exit
Updated June 03, 2025
Tom Thibodeau’s tenure as head coach of the New York Knicks has ended. The institution announced the Knicks coaching change Tuesday, days after the team’s elimination from the postseason.
Thibodeau guided New York to its first Eastern Conference finals appearance since 2000, where they lost to the Indiana Pacers in six games. According to ESPN Research, this marks the first time the Knicks have dismissed a head coach following a conference or NBA Finals appearance the preceding season.
During thibodeau’s five seasons, the Knicks made the playoffs four times, securing four series victories. Before his arrival in 2020, New York had only one playoff series win since the 2000-01 season. The move signals a strategic shift for the Knicks as they seek to build on recent successes and aim for a championship.
Despite the loss, Knicks guard Jalen Brunson had publicly supported Thibodeau in a postgame news conference. “Is that a real question right now? Did you just ask me if I believe that he’s the right guy? Yes,” Brunson said after losing to the Pacers.

I am a Tom Thibodeau fan. He brought this team back. I felt he gave every bit of himself and was always looking to improve. I will always be grateful for how far he brought the Knicks. They are relevant again. They are championship contenders again. The Knicks became winners…
